Smoke detectors save lives, most people think about them only during Fire Prevention Week. They should be thought about all year long.

Smoke detectors should be tested once each month, while doing this use the test to also practice your home escape plan.

Those who have battery operated detectors, besides checking the battery each month, should replace it twice each year. A good time to replace the battery is when the time changes each spring and fall.

Location of smoke detectors is very important. There should be one on each level of your residence. When installing a detector on each level take into consideration kitchens and bathrooms. Installing detectors near these locations will give false indications. The life of a smoke detector is between seven and ten years, when they get this old it is time to think about replacing it.

If there are any questions about smoke detectors check with your local Fire Department they may be able to help you.
