Memorial Day Ceremony 2011 |
Memorial
Day, May 30th,
2011 the weather was near perfect with a slight breeze to offset the warm temperature. A sizeable crowd of residents
once again showed up to take part in honoring and
remembering our veterans.
Clerk Kathy Svoboda emceed the service, which started off with the colors
being presented by the Justice Police Honor Guard and the
American Legion Post #735.
Mayor Wasowicz lead the crowd in the "Pledge
of Allegiance" and then
Pastor Brian Miller, from the Roberts Road Bible Church,
read the invocation.
Invited to do readings were, Justice Veteran residents Joe
Chicola who read "The War Inevitable" by Patrick Henry, and
Joe Egas who read his own thoughts about service to our
country and Memorial Day.
It was then time for Mayor
Wasowicz to lay the wreath at the Memorial.
Justice resident, Ray Hodson lead the crowd in the singing of "America"
(My Country Tis of Thee) (Click
HERE for"
My Country Tis of Thee" lyrics).
The service then came
to a close with the playing of "Taps"
and the retiring of the colors.
Refreshments were served in
the All Purpose Room at the Village Hall.
The ceremony
on a whole only lasted twenty
short
minutes, but they are the most meaningful and significant twenty minutes anyone could spend on any day!
If
you didn't have the chance to be there, one would suggest
that you join next year's ceremony. Bring your children so
they and yourself can experience and understand the
Real Meaning of Memorial Day

fortunate residents. The applications, to qualify to receive a
December Holiday Basket, will be at the Village starting Monday, November 22nd.
Please note that all December Holiday Baskets are delivered
December 18th. All applications must be filled out properly and

The 2009 Holiday Basket Program
was a huge success due to the efforts of many
people. The Special Events Committee, under the
direction of Trustee George Pastorino, were able to
service 54 families and bring to them a happier
holiday season. Food and toys were
donated
by residents and the school children of the
Brodnicki, Wilkins Schools and Argo H.S.. The 4th,
5th and 6th grade Student Council from Wilkins
Elementary, teachers Teri Gorleski and Lauren
Angelico came to the Village Hall to wrap all of the
donated toys that would be placed in the baskets.
The did a fabulous job. John Gino’s Pizza, of
Justice, donated pizzas for the kids lunch. A
special thanks goes out to the local businesses,
vendors and organizations for their cash donations.
Donors included;
Lyons Township, Technicraft, Justice Willow Springs
Water Commission, Delgaldo Law Group, Kris Wasowicz
Friends, Allen Heating, The Flower Shop, Cable
Electric, Chicago Interior, All Parts, Stecz Inc.,
Highland Naprapathic, RJS Refrigerated Express,
Justice Medical-Surgical Center, Anagnos Door,
Fasano’s Pizza, Robert T. Miserendino DDS, Argo
Community H.S., and the Justice Fraternal Order of
Police.
Even in these hard economic times over five thousand
dollars was raised by these individuals, businesses
and organizations. They responded without hesitation
and donated to this very worthy and needed program.
The
funds raised that were not utilized to supplement
the food drive will be added to the scholarship
fund. The Special Events Committee did an
outstanding job putting together the baskets,
organizing the December 19th deliveries and pick–ups
all within a minimal time frame. The food and toys
that had been collected from the collection barrels
that had been placed at; Village Hall, Justice
Library, Wilkin’s and Brodnicki Schools were sorted
on Dec. 17th in order to evaluate what would be
needed from the store to fill the baskets with the
essentials. The baskets included; a turkey (donated
by Technicraft), a spiral ham, milk, eggs, bread,
potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, cereal,
assorted canned vegetables, a bag of apples,
oranges, and other misc. food items. If the
recipients had children the wrapped donated
toys/gifts were included. That evening the committee
and many volunteers, comprised of residents and Argo
H.S. students, prepared the baskets for the next
day.
On
Dec. 19th, delivery/pickup day, The mayor, clerk,
trustees, ESDA and many volunteers delivered baskets
and warmly greeted the families that came in to pick
up their baskets. Trustee Pastorino, the Special
Events Committee, Mayor Wasowicz, Clerk Svoboda ,
and the Trustees would like to thank all of the
volunteers, donors, the school children and the
school districts for their efforts in making this
Year’s food drive a huge success and making the
holidays for the families that received the baskets
a happier one! They were truly grateful for what was
done for them. |
